If you’re working on NYC Housing Preservation and Development affordable housing projects, there is no better time to get Passive House Certified training with The Passive House Network and Emu Passive. The Certified Passive House Designer (CPHD) and Certified Tradesperson (CPHT) courses are the premier Passive House training for building professionals, and contractors, supported by the 30-year history of global technical leadership of the Passive House Institute.

The courses are geared to provide fundamental knowledge applicable to your Passive House projects and prepare you for the certification exam. If you are not eligible or interested in certification, please see other courses in the Education tab.

Steps to participate:

  1. Determine the training that fits your work and review the brochures and other linked course descriptions available below.
  2. Apply by filling out the linked HPD sign-up form, and indicate the course you wish to take.
  3. If applying for the CPHD course, once approved by HPD, you will be given a discount code to register & enroll directly on the PHN website.
  4. If applying for the CPHT course, once approved by HPD, your name will be added to the registration list for enrollment in the next class. If CPHT class schedules don’t work for you, an online version of the course is possible.

CPHD Training for Architects, Engineers & Consultants

With CPHD training you’ll get a comprehensive grounding in the fundamentals of Passive House that prepares you to work successfully on Passive House projects while earning 35 AIA LU/HSW CEUs.

The course is held with live online sessions and on-demand learning modules, over approximately 8 weeks from kick-off to completion. The pacing of the coursework is designed to meet your busy schedule.

Course Kick-Off Dates: The Summer 2025 course starts July 1. (Future course dates will be listed: Fall, Winter, etc.)

CPHD Exam: It is then followed by recommended but optional exam prep for sitting the Certified Passive House Designer Exam and, upon passing, receiving the professional credential. You have the option of registering to take the exam during the course.

CPHT Training for Builders, Contractors & Trades

The Passive Design/Build™ CPHT course covers the basics of the Passive House standard, as well as high-performance construction details and best practices, while preparing students for the CPHT certification exam.

The training is delivered in person in Manhattan over 2-days for a deep dive. Or, if the scheduled in-person classes don’t work, a more flexible self-paced online version can be made available.

Course Dates: The CPHT in-person course will be held on dates in the Summer (July Thu 24 + Fri 25).

CPHT Exam: The exam is offered online, with an additional dedicated study session. Registration is offered once you’re signed up for the course. Participants in Emu’s course have a higher CPHT exam pass rate than other CPHT course providers (i.e. 96%+ pass vs 88% globally).
