The California Rebuilds
Award Ceremony Program

Next Tuesday, the winners of the California Rebuilds Design Competition will be announced. We hope you’ll join us on November 4th at 5:30PM at the AIA LA Center for Communities.

The panelists come from a range of backgrounds and perspectives.

Aurora Barboza Flores, Altadena Resident. Aurora has been a National Board Certified Mathematics teacher at Glendale High School for 27 years. She moved to Altadena in 2019, but lost her home during the Eaton Fire. After learning about Passive House Principles, Aurora knew without a doubt that this was the type of home she would rebuild. She is working with Andrew Michler, principal of Hyperlocal Workshop.

Bronwyn Barry, Principal, Passive House BB. Bronwyn is an award-winning architect based in San Francisco. Her firm, Passive House BB, specializes in delivering elegantly comfortable, low energy buildings using the international Passive House standard. Her projects have been used as case studies by the DOE, confirming the PHPP as a cost-effective, reliable design tool for California’s mild climates. Bronwyn’s policy advocacy and policy research work as been widely published and is referenced broadly in studies reviewing Passive House adoptions.

Robin Tung, Director of Public Relations, Building Decarbonization Coalition. Robin leads national and multi-state communications strategies that shape the media landscape and influence policy to create safer, healthier, and more affordable homes and buildings. Prior to joining BDC, she developed communications strategies for the Santa Monica Conservancy and architecture firms, taught writing at colleges, and contributed to a contemporary arts review. She lives in Los Angeles with her daughter.

Stuart Mitchell, Founder, Wildfire Mitigation Advisors. Stuart is an NFPA Certified Wildfire Mitigation Specialist. Founder of Wildfire Mitigation Advisors, based in Sonoma County, Stuart has personally evaluated thousands of structures and advised occupants living in estates, HOAs, ranches, and commercial properties. Stuart’s passion for educating clients about site-specific mitigations is unique in its depth and holistic approach. As a former FEMA crisis counselor for fire survivors and in helping his community recover and prepare for firestorms, Stuart deeply understands what it takes to build and maintain wildfire resilience, both in behavioral and physical adaptations.

We also welcome the student jury, 12 high school students at Glendale High, organized by panelist Aurora Barboza Flores, who were responsible for selecting the Students’ Choice Award, as special guests.

We are looking forward to celebrating exceptional Passive House design with the Los Angeles community. You can register to join us here.

The winners will be posted online on November 5th.
