Course Overview

This course will provide participants with an introduction to thermal-bridge simulation and analysis using the free LBNL THERM software. It will consist of pre-recorded ‘on-demand’ videos, which will walk participants through an entire sequence of installation, library setup, and the modeling of several example conditions.

It will also primarily feature recorded screen-casts and a ‘model-along’ style where the instructor will narrate the process and concepts as they model the sample details. A variety of example cases will be used, starting out with a very simple wall and progressing into more complex details. For the most part, the examples will focus on wood-frame construction and remain relatively simple.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Participants will gain understand of the 2D heat flow simulation too LBNL THERM, and learn how to model, edit and simulate heat flow simulations for common construction details.
  • Participants will be exposed to a broad range to rule documents and reference materials which are critically important for any professional looking to integrate thermal bridge simulations into their Passive House workflows.
  • Using THERM, participants will create a full set of real-world examples, including typical assembly U-Values, as well as junctions, and even ground-contact details.
  • Learn how to extract useful results from THERM and how to calculate Psi-Values and U-Values for the examples created. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the full model, simulation and analysis workflow.
