To maintain your Certified Passive House Designer or Consultant credential, renewal is required after five years.
There are two ways to renew your credential.
- Complete a Certified Passive House and submit project documentation to a PHI Assessor for approval. This allows Designers and Consultants to maintain their current status.
- If a building is larger than 43,000 SF two persons can submit documentation and obtain renewal for the same project.
- Active Assessors in the US include CertiPHIers Cooperative and Emu Passive.
- Contact the assessor for documentation requirements and fee.
- Complete 100 hours of PHI continuing education units. If CPHDs utilize this method, they retain a certified credential but in the modified form as a Certified Passive House Consultant. Consultants retain the Consultant credential with this method as well.
- PHI education units are obtained by attending a PHI-approved course, advanced training, or event and then recording those events on the PHI continuing education renewal form.
- PHI units may also be obtained by teaching a PHI-approved course.
- No more than 70 units may be acquired from only events, advanced training, or teaching.
- See section 5.2.1 for further details.
- PHN regularly provides approved events and advanced training. Completing PHPP, Thermal Bridging, and other advanced training can easily provide half the credits needed, with conferences and free events picking up the balance.
- Submit the renewal form along with Certificates issued by the approved events confirming participation to planer@passiv.de
- The cost for renewal is 450 Euros. PHN members receive a 20% discount.
- NOTE: PHI and PHN are not collecting your credits as you go. You need to collect your credits as you go and then submit them all to PHI when you are ready.
HAS YOUR CREDENTIAL EXPIRED? DON’T WORRY
- If your credential has expired you can reactivate it by using credit points that are less than 5 years old.

A Note on Educational Unit Types:
- The Advanced Training Category includes PHN Specialized Training offerings, PHN Continuing Education Courses (below), and PHI advanced training, such as PHPP Expert, provided by PHI or other training providers.
- The Events Category includes attending conferences and symposiums, in-person or online, that provide PHI CEUs.
Host an Event or Advanced Training
Providing PHI CEUs at your next event or advanced training can increase your impact.
Not sure it qualifies? Follow these basic guidelines: The training or event should provide education that builds on the fundamental CPHT and CPHD course training, providing some specialized knowledge useful to CPHTs and CPHDs in achieving PHI-building standards. Examples of this include a focus on:
- Case studies showing specific applications.
- Enclosures or mechanical systems.
- Project processes and/or QA/QC.
- Building design and construction economics.
- Building codes and regulations.
- Building incentives.
- Energy modeling.
- Related sustainability objectives.
- much, much more…
Submit directly to PHI through their Request for PHI Credit Points form. The form is simple and asks for basic information:
