Northeast Passive House

Northeast Passive House serves Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Vermont. We are a group of Passive House professionals, practitioners, developers, and supporters who advocate for the international Passive House building energy standard.

Northeast Passive House regularly engages with the community to promote better building standards. We hold monthly online meetings and frequently collaborate with local organizations like Connecticut Passive House and Passive House Massachusetts.

The Northeast is home to several Passive House buildings, and many of them also happen to be schools. You can see some of them in our recent blog post. Many of these buildings and other Passive House projects in the northeast region frequently participate in Passive House Open Days.

We are always looking for volunteers who are ready to engage with our community! Reach out if you’re interested.

The First Passive House Hotel in North America

Connecticut is home to Hotel Marcel, the first Passive House hotel in North America, where the 2026 Passive House conference was held. The brutalist building was originally completed in 1970 as a corporate headquarters by Marcel Breuer. In 2022, it was renovated to the Passive House EnerPHit standard to become an award-winning hotel. The building now features over 9,000 square feet of meeting space, 165 hotel rooms, and an all-electric kitchen.

The building’s rectangular design creates an efficient envelope while deep-set windows offer ample daylight and reduce solar heat gain in the summer. Triple-pane windows provide superior acoustic and thermal insulation, ensuring a quiet experience for guests despite the nearby highway. VRF and ERV units reduce energy consumption by about 80% compared to a standard building while delivering continuous fresh air.
