Energy modeling and tools

Every Passive House is designed with an energy model. Certification uses PHI's Passive House Planning Package (PHPP), which calculates heating, cooling, and total energy use from the building's shape, enclosure, windows, shading, systems, and climate. PHI certifies on the model and the evidence that it was built, not on measured bills.

The model works best as a design tool, used from the first sketches. Shape, orientation, and window area are cheap to change early and expensive later. A compact form, windows sized and shaded for the sun, and enough insulation usually do more than mechanical equipment can.

Optimization means finding where the next dollar does the most. Money spent on the enclosure can shrink the mechanical system. Designers should keep a margin below the limits while the design develops, and update the model with every change through construction.

The model is only as good as its inputs. After move-in, the PHPP can compare measured use with a prediction recalculated for the actual weather and indoor temperatures.
